Private Coaching

Private coaching at KINGS CLUB is open to players of all ages, abilities and ambitions.
That range is probably wider than people might expect.
I coach six-year-olds who are only just beginning to the game. I coach junior players who are serious about improving and progressing through school, club and representative cricket. I coach senior players who want detailed technical work, video analysis and the closest thing possible to a professional private coaching environment.
I also coach plenty of players in their thirties, forties and fifties who simply want to come down, hit a few balls, bowl a few overs and enjoy playing cricket.
All of those are perfectly good reasons to have private coaching.
Like most things we do at KINGS CLUB, the starting point is the individual.

PRIVATE COACHING DOESN’T HAVE TO MEAN COACHING TO BECOME ELITE

There can sometimes be an assumption that one-to-one coaching is only for young players trying to reach representative cricket or experienced players trying to make technical changes.
It can be that.
But it doesn’t have to be.
Sometimes somebody hasn’t played for ten years and wants an hour in a net without having to walk straight back into a team environment.
Sometimes a player simply enjoys batting and wants someone to bowl at them, feed balls and give them a little guidance along the way.
Sometimes an adult bowler wants somewhere to get through a proper spell and work on rhythm.
And sometimes the player in front of me genuinely wants to work.
They want technical analysis. They want to understand why something is happening. They want video feedback, drills, measurable improvement and a clear idea of what we are trying to develop from one session to the next.
The coaching should reflect the person standing in front of us.
Not the other way around.

1:1 COACHING

We offer individual private coaching from six years of age upwards, with no upper age limit.
One-to-one coaching gives us the greatest opportunity to focus entirely on the needs of one player.
For a young beginner, that might mean building the basic movement patterns and skills that will give them a good foundation in the game.
For a developing junior, it might be more detailed work around batting technique, bowling actions, fielding, decision-making or preparation for matches and selection.
For an experienced player, we can go considerably deeper.
That may include video analysis, technical diagnosis, specific skill development, scenario work and the type of detailed conversations that are difficult to have in a larger group environment.
But there is no compulsory formula.
If you want the full coaching experience, we can provide it.
If you want to come down for an hour, hit plenty of balls and leave feeling better about your cricket than when you arrived, we can do that too.

SMALL GROUP COACHING

Private coaching doesn’t necessarily have to be one-to-one.
We also coach small groups of up to six players.
There are a couple of reasons for keeping the groups at that size.
The first is simple: it helps spread the cost of coaching between the players.
The second is more important from a coaching perspective.
Once a group becomes too large, private coaching starts to lose the thing that makes it useful in the first place — individual attention.
With groups of two to six, we can still spend meaningful time with each player while also using the other players to create more realistic and varied sessions.
Two friends might want to train together.
A few teammates might want to work on a particular part of their game.
Parents may want to organise a small group of junior players at a similar stage of development.
Or a group of adult cricketers might simply want a quality net with some coaching built into it.
The structure can change according to what that particular group wants from the session.

YOU DON’T HAVE TO PLAY FOR KINGS CLUB

This is important.
Having private coaching at KINGS CLUB does not mean you have to play cricket for KINGS CLUB.
We coach players from across Singapore.
They play for different clubs, different schools and at different levels of the game, including players involved with Singapore national teams.
That is how I believe private coaching should work.
Our job in that environment is to help the player in front of us.
If somebody represents another club on Saturday, that makes no difference to how I coach them on Wednesday.
If a school player comes to us because they want some additional help alongside their existing programme, they are welcome.
If somebody ultimately wants to play for KINGS CLUB, of course we would be pleased to have that conversation.
But it is not a condition of being coached here.

THE PROFESSIONAL COACHING EXPERIENCE

My own background inevitably shapes the way I coach.
I spent eight years as a professional cricketer at Surrey and have spent much of my life in coaching and performance environments.
There are things from professional cricket that translate extremely well into private coaching.
Attention to detail.
Understanding why a skill is breaking down rather than simply identifying that it is.
Using video where it genuinely adds value.
Building repeatable movements.
Creating sessions with a clear purpose.
And understanding that technical changes have to work when a player is under pressure, not simply when everything is controlled in a net.
For players who want that level of detail, it is available.
But one of the things experience has also taught me is that more coaching is not always better coaching.
Not every ball needs a technical comment.
Not every player needs to rebuild their technique.
Sometimes the most useful thing a coach can do is simplify something, give the player confidence in what they already do well and then get out of the way while they practise it.
Good private coaching should be personal enough to know the difference.

COACHING THE PLAYER IN FRONT OF US

Two players can arrive at the same session, at the same age and with roughly the same ability, and need completely different things.
One may need more technical information.
The other may need less.
One may respond well to video analysis.
Another may understand something immediately once they feel the movement themselves.
One might be working towards a specific selection or competition.
Another may have no objective beyond enjoying cricket for an hour.
That is why we do not try to force every player through the same coaching template.
We start with where you are, what you want from the game and what is realistically going to help you.
Then we coach from there.

ALL ARE WELCOME

If your child is six and wants some individual attention as they begin learning the game, we can help.
If they are fourteen and trying to take their cricket more seriously, we can help.
If you are playing representative cricket and want detailed technical work and video analysis, we can help.
If you are forty-five, haven’t played properly for years and just fancy seeing whether you can still hit a cover drive, you are equally welcome.
And if a few friends or teammates want to train together, our small-group sessions give you the opportunity to do that without losing the individual coaching attention that matters.
You do not need to be a KINGS CLUB player.
You do not need to be an elite player.
You do not even need a particularly complicated reason for wanting to book a session.
We will build the coaching around you.
